Pysanky Egg Decorating Workshop

Instructor: Lisa O’Neill Materials will be provided

Cost: $50.00

About the Workshop

Traditional pysanky (Ukrainian eggs) are created using a system of layered beeswax and coloured dyes.  The craft is ancient and beautiful.  Typically, these eggs were created around Easter to be presented at the mass on Easter Sunday.  Today, everyone associates decorated eggs with Easter without knowing why.  Using traditional tools, Lisa O’Neill will take you through the symbology and history of pysanky while you create your own egg to take home.

Because the dye is permanent, it is requested that all students wear old clothes.

Workshop Details

  • April 18, 1-4pm
  • Cost: $50 for non-members, $45 for members

About the Instructor

Lisa O’Neill learned the art of pysanky over 40 years ago from a treasured Ukrainian woman who is her second mother.  From the first egg she made, she was intrigued by the process of layered wax and dye and each subsequent egg became more and more refined.  She currently lives in Cheticamp and pursues the traditional crafts of painting, sewing, quilting and pysanky.
